Ordinary Requirement #8 - Ground Tackle

Requirement 8:

  1. Describe five types of anchors.

  2. Describe how each type holds the bottom, the kind of bottom in which it holds best, and any other advantages or disadvantages.

  3. Name the parts of a stock and stockless anchor.

  4. Demonstrate the ability to weigh and set anchor.

Danforth Anchor

  • This is the most popular anchor for small recreational boats.

  • This anchor works by digging into the mud or sand.

  • It is of little use on grassy bottoms as it will slide and may hang up in a rocky bottom.

Grapnel Anchor

  • This is the anchor to use for rocky bottoms.

  • The hooks will hook under rocks.

Mushroom Anchor

  • This is the anchor used in permanent moorings.

  • Over time, this anchor digs deeply into the bottom.

  • It has tremendous holding power.

  • Small versions of this anchor are used by fisherman as it holds well in mud or sand in calm, protected waters.

  • This anchor does not work well in grassy or rocky bottoms.

Northill Anchor

  • Usually used for larger boats

  • This anchor penetrates the bottom surface, digging in for a strong hold.

Plow Anchor

  • This type of anchor is used mostly on large sailboats.

  • When pulled on, it digs deeply into the bottom.

  • It is efficient but clumsy to handle and slow.
